Lesson 4 Integration Benefits
ObjectiveDescribe the benefits of integrating Proxy Server with other Networking Services

Integration Benefits with Proxy Server

Proxy Server 2.0 can integrate with other network technologies included with Windows 2000. You can use Proxy Server together with IPSec to protect communications to and from the proxy server. You can also take advantage of Proxy Server 2.0's integration with Active Directory to create access controls based on user accounts and security group memberships. Proxy Server 2.0 can also integrate with Routing and Remote Access Services and take advantage of nonpersistent connections that work via demand dialing.
The following table describes the benefits of integrating Proxy Server with other networking services.

Proxy Server integrates with... In order to...
Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) Provide Proxy Server authentication and the encryption of data transmitted between locations over public networks
Routing and Remote Access Provide support for nonpersistent connections by using specified demand-dial connections Reduce undesired traffic by using specified IP filters
Active Directory Provide Kerberos 5.0 protocol certificates and user accounts so that authentication occurs when specified

Microsoft Successor Technology to Proxy Server?

Microsoft Forefront Threat Management Gateway (TMG) is the successor to Microsoft Proxy Server. Microsoft Proxy Server was a basic proxy server product that provided caching and filtering of internet traffic, while Microsoft TMG is a more advanced gateway product that provides a wide range of network security features, including web filtering, intrusion prevention, and VPN access.
Microsoft TMG was released in 2010 as the successor to Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server, which itself was the successor to Microsoft Proxy Server. TMG was designed to provide secure access to the internet and corporate networks, with features such as URL filtering, HTTPS inspection, and application-layer filtering. However, Microsoft announced in 2012 that it was discontinuing development of TMG, and that the product would be retired from mainstream support in 2015. As a result, organizations that require network security features similar to those provided by TMG are advised to consider other products and technologies, such as firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention systems, and secure web gateways.
